Project Description

Inspired by reading comprehension tests, I have chosen to develop a mark up language (with xml) based on the similarities and discrepancies in how different people read the same text. I have recorded video of three different people reading "APPLE" from Tender Buttons by Gerturde Stein. I have observed and interpreted the reading process for them. Making sure to note where they pause (without formal indication to do so), repeat words or phrases, stutter, mispronounce words, read more rapidly and other observations of the like. From these observations, I have defined a core set of tags that I have used to embellish the markup of the poem. I then manipulated the display of the poem so that all readers of the poem will comprehend it the same way the videoed reader did. For example, I styled words that caused confusion with with a blurry or indecipherable font. It was done several times so the user can witness the differences and similarities in the readers' understanding of the text through the different stylings of the poem. Linked are all the videos so the user may interpret for himself the reader's behaviors and reading patterns.
